Job Summary

The award-winning Chico News & Review, the state’s largest newspaper (42,000 circ) north of Sacramento, is looking to add a talented Staff Writer to our newsroom. This position is responsible for writing two to three stories weekly while also working on long-form pieces to be published as cover stories, as well as other duties, as assigned by the Editor. The stories therein may include coverage of city government, including meetings on a tight deadline; features related to the environment and health; or general assignment news features. The Staff Writer will attend weekly editorial meetings to discuss timely issues, topics and events from which to develop stories, and must keep on top of current local affairs and trends. Chico is small metropolitan city (about 90,000 population) that is home to a California State University campus. The surrounding region offers vast opportunities for outdoor recreation, including the city’s 3,600-acre park.

Typical hours for this position are 40 hours/week; may need to work some nights and weekends, but mostly a daytime job.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Consistently meet deadlines
• Attends the weekly editorial staff meeting
• Works cooperatively with editors and art directors
• Writing and proofreading
• Story generation
• Take photos for publication and/or make photo assignments

Knowledge and Abilities

• Ability to develop sources through networking, using the telephone and developing relationships with people outside the office
• Understanding of local government
• Ability to identify leads for stories through observing situations outside of the office
• Knowledge of reporting techniques and ability to to write in a magazine style
• Must be able to take direction and meet strict deadlines
• Mastery of AP style, grammar and punctuation
• Interest and knowledge in health care and green issues and trends
• Must be an excellent multi-tasker
• Basic photography skills

Education and Experience

Must have two years experience as a reporter or staff writer at a non-university publication. A college degree in journalism or related field is preferred.

$13.00 – $15.00 / hr DOE
